The Prowler

February, although the shortest month, is full of good stuff. The patriotic observances of Washington's and Lincoln's birthdays occur this month, as does every romantic's favorite holiday: Valentine's Day! A more recent distinction is Black History Month, which fortunately most people know about. However, there are two animal-related honors bestowed to February that the Prowler thinks most people do not know about.

According to a flyer from the nonprofit National Bird-Feeding Society, February is National Wild Bird Feeding Month. Although some cats like to feed on birds, the Prowler prefers the old adage, "live and let live." That being said, this cat was surprised to read that among the birds that don't fly away for the winter, many spend most of their waking hours searching for food and deplete up to 20 percent of their body weight overnight, just trying to keep warm!

Six years ago, the NBFS established National Wild Bird Feeding Month to spread the word about these and other feathered facts. Different birds prefer different foods and feeding locations, so before running out to buy a feeder, visit the NBFS's website at www.birdfeeding.org. Los Gatos' own Wild Bird Center in the Kings Court Shopping Center is also a great source for anything avian!

February is also Spay and Neuter Month at the Humane Society of Santa Clara Valley; the nonprofit now offers altering surgeries for dogs and cats at half its normal low prices. Not only does this prevent pet overpopulation, it also reduces the chances of certain reproductive system cancers and lessens a pet's desire to wander. Call 727-3383 ext. 762 for an appointment.
