Resident sends a valentine to the community

My father, Bill Schmae, died in December at the age of 90. He had only lived in Los Gatos for six years, having moved from Wisconsin to be close to family. In declining physical and mental health, his last few years were often traumatic.

This letter is my valentine to the many wonderful people in Los Gatos who brightened his last years.

The clerks at Walgreen's who called him by name and brought him home when he locked his keys in the car.

The policemen who treated him so kindly and respectfully when he dinged a car in a parking lot and drove off.

His barber, who continued to tell my father's stories for him when he could no longer talk.

The clerks at Lunardi's who gathered around to sing him "Happy Birthday."

The people of Faith Lutheran Church who accepted him even when he was being difficult and loved him anyway.

The neighbors and friends who went out of their way to make him feel welcome in his new town.

The wonderful staff at The Terraces of Los Gatos, who showed their caring in a hundred different ways.

Los Gatos, from my heart to yours, thank you.

Thanks for helping get 8th-graders to Washington, D.C.

The 8th-grade students from Fisher Middle School who have been busy fundraising for their Washington, D.C., trips in April would like to thank their parents, school faculty, friends and community residents for helping them raise $9,500 washing cars and selling candy, coupon books, turkey-drawing tickets, holiday bread and Christmas wreaths!!!

A really big thank-you to Le Boulanger Bakery in Los Gatos for providing the delicious cinnamon nut/raisin bread at a great cost which was sold for Thanksgiving and Christmas. We would also like to thank these merchants for their donations of turkeys or wreath supplies: Los Gatos Meats, Nob Hill, Whole Foods, Safeway on N. Santa Cruz and Union avenues, Lunardi's, Lucky's, Cosentino's, Costco, Affordable Treasures, Ace Hardware Rural Supply and Patchen California Tree Farm.

Los Gatos' tree lighting fund could use a boost

On Dec. 4, the Los Gatos Weekly-Times printed a short commentary piece by Los Gatos resident Dave Aikman. In it, he aptly described the lackluster appearance of the town Christmas tree and how it could be more spectacular if it had more lights.

He challenged the town's residents to donate funds to the Los Gatos Community Foundation, earmarked for additional lights for the tree. Since then, a small amount of checks have trickled in and have been put in an account for that purpose.

With the recent memory of the last tree-lighting ceremony still fresh in our minds, however, I'm asking for continued donations. We have about $500 so far, and in our preliminary research have discovered that a single strand costs approximately $1,000. So, you can see we still have a long way to go!

I want to thank those who have supported this idea already and am personally looking forward to the event becoming more and more awe-inspiring each year!

Los Gatos Lions come through one more time

We would like to thank the Los Gatos Lions Club for its task of installing the holiday banners and replacing them with our beautiful Downtown Los Gatos banners. The Los Gatos Lions Club is truly a community service group--always there to help when needed. Thank you, thank you.
