The Prowler

The Prowler always starts thinking of hearts and flowery things as Valentine's Day approaches. Although this feline likes romance as much as the next cat, the Prowler can't help but notice how commercialized the holiday has become.

Restaurants tempt couples with multicourse dinners featuring exotic foods and bubbly libations. Hotels offer getaway packages that range from simple to sensuous. Even bookstores jump on the bandwagon with ads for reads such as "Erotic Astrology" or "Find the Love of Your Life in 10 Easy Steps."

Here are some ideas for those who prefer celebrating without the standard hoopla and hype.

Try a jaunt over the hill and do some beachcombing. Write your names in the sand; collect pretty seashells and stones; get into a silly water-fight or sit on a craggy rock and stare at the ocean. Whether it's the salty air, the crashing waves or more subtle elements, there's something about a beach that's magic.

Another outdoor activity closer to home is a day at the park. Vasona is a good choice because it's bigger than town parks; hence, you can hike around and find peaceful spots without being interrupted by cars or children close by. Bring along some snacks for when you're hungry.

Afterward, why not become "kids for the day" and play on the swings, slides and playground equipment? Whether you plan to grow old with your significant other or are already up in years, always keep in touch with the kid in your heart.

If food is the way to your date's or partner's heart, treat him or her to dining in rather than eating out. A thoughtful, well-prepared meal can create a longer-lasting impression than dinner at the fanciest restaurant. Even if you can only cook macaroni and hot dogs, describe the food in a culinary way, write up a keepsake menu and be creative with the ambiance. And don't forget dessert--chocolate fondue is always a good choice.
