Gatos girls in CCS soccer playoffs

    By Dick Sparrer

One season ended last week but another is still going strong on the soccer field at Los Gatos High.

The Los Gatos girls soccer team crushed Mountain View 7-1 on the final day of the regular season to wrap up the championship in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League with an 11-1 record.

With the title, the Wildcats earned a place in the Central Coast Section Division II playoffs. The Cats, 13-3-2 for the year, will open the playoffs against Harbor (11-0-3) on Feb. 16 at a time and place yet to be determined.

The Gatos girls clobbered the Spartans in the final game of the league season.

Senior Kate Demers knocked in three goals and added an assist in the Gatos victory. Freshman Ashley Benson chipped in with two goals and an assist and senior Kirstin Horn added two goals.

Junior Carolyn Penner also had a big day for the Wildcats with four assists.

The Los Gatos boys, meanwhile, finished the year on a losing note, falling 1-0 to Homestead in De Anza Division play. The Mustangs advance to the CCS playoffs, but the loss ended the Los Gatos season at 1-7-4 in the division.
