FAIR ALERT FOR GARDEN LOVERS

Applications are now available for the design of garden plots at the 1996 Santa Clara County Fair, which runs from July 24 through Aug. 4. The 300-square-foot gardens will be displayed prominently and will demonstrate themes reflecting the fair's activities and cultural diversity.

All plots will be reviewed by a panel of judges, and prizes from $335 to $425 will be awarded to winning displays. The gardeners' names will be featured next to their displays.

Each of the five classes has its own theme: "A Dream Garden," functional or display gardens; "Let's Go Native," gardens featuring native California plants or the plants of yesteryear; "Pool Reflections," shade-loving plants (gardens must have 35 percent color); "A Party in the Garden," must be designed by children ages 10 through 16 on a festive theme (this will be judged separately from adult classes); "Fair Theme 1996--Squiggles & Giggles," farm setting or country ambiance and may include floral or vegetable displays.

Plots are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Entries are $45 per plot with a limit to two entries per person, group, organization or family per class. Only amateurs may apply.

Applications can be picked up at the administration building at the fairgrounds, 344 Tully Road, San Jose. For more information, contact Bernice Avina, 494-3134.
