Council approves widening project

The Town Council voted Feb. 5 to fund the widening of the bridge overcrossing at Blossom Hill Road and Highway 17. The council approved $100,000 for the project, which is meant to reduce conflicts between bicyclists and motorists.

The monies will come from the town's traffic mitigation fund. Caltrans has agreed to share the costs of the project, which will involve widening the overcrossing by five feet, adding sidewalks to both sides of the bridge, and building a chain-link fence on top of existing concrete barriers.

Community Services seeks volunteers

Los Gatos's Community Services Department needs two volunteers: one to compile and distribute a community calendar, and another with computer skills to install, load and support a new database for the town's volunteer program.

In addition, the Department of Parks, Forestry and Maintenance is seeking a clerical aide.

Town commends its volunteers

Three Los Gatans were honored by the Town Council at a Feb. 5 meeting for their ongoing volunteer work.

Vic Collord, who has lived in Los Gatos since 1946, was commended for his various efforts over the years. Collord, who did a 29-year stint as a scoutmaster, also helped raise funds for landscaping along the Los Gatos Creek Trial and build the Sky-Sea Trail at Castle Rock State Park.

Vic Sugai, who worked for the Department of Parks, Forestry and Maintenance for 22 years, was praised for his four years as a member of the Trails and Bikeways Committee and for his ongoing graffiti-eradication efforts.

Shirley Henderson, who for three years served as the chairwoman of the Los Gatos Downtown Association's Beautification Committee, was honored for her work in shaping the town's newspaper rack ordinance.
