Another LG High alumna sighting--this one at ComedySportz, a club where teams of performers improvise humorous sketches. The shows are set up as competitions, and Gail Brennan was, unfortunately, on the losing team last Friday.
It might have gone the other way if a certain cat's mate hadn't cheated during the audience voting, which involves holding up a Judge's Whap-ner--actually a fly-swatter--to indicate which team you thought performed the better sketch. There were three couples at our table and each had one set of Whap-ners, a blue one for Brennan's team and a red one for the other team. The Prowler was supposed to be in charge of ours.
But the mate decided that this cat's judgment was faulty and cast a vote for the red team that nullified the Prowler's vote for the blue team. It was hard to tell whether the ref counted this extra vote and whether this errant fly-swatter turned the tide toward the red team. If it did, the Prowler publicly apologizes on behalf of an impulsive mate.
This little incident did nothing to dampen our Valentine's Day spirit, particularly because that Hallmark holiday is also our anniversary. We didn't plan it that way; it just happened. If we had planned it, our first kiss probably would have taken place somewhere other than in front of a liquor store. Not the most romantic of settings, but the Prowler was not exactly concerned with the surroundings at that moment.
A much better V-Day setting would be Waves, which also celebrates its anniversary Feb. 14. This year, LG's premiere reggae club is having (or had, depending on when you're reading this) a birthday party with musical hosts the Yardies. Members of the 40-odd bands that played the club in 1995 were issued invites to this giant jam session.
Waves has been anchored in Old Town for six years now, but the club will have to relocate next year, when renovations to the shopping center are slated to begin.
