Wildcats vs. Firebirds--it'll be anybody's game

If comparative scores are any indication, then it should be a pretty close game when the Los Gatos and Fremont girls basketball teams collide in a league game this week.

The Wildcats and Firebirds will meet on Feb. 17, 7 p.m., at Fremont in one of the final games of the 1998-99 season. Both clubs met up with powerhouse Homestead last week, and both lost by 20 points or more.

The Gatos girls slipped to 1-8 in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League after a 55-30 loss to the Mustangs, and the Firebirds dropped to 3-7 after a 54-34 loss to Homestead.

The two clubs rest at the bottom of the standings in the division, but are just barely under .500 for the season. Los Gatos slipped to 9-12 for the year after the loss to Homestead, and Fremont is 9-14.

The game at Fremont just could be the last opportunity for a Los Gatos win this season. The Cats wrap up the league season against division leader St. Francis on Friday. The Lancers, 9-1 in league and 20-4 for the year, visit Los Gatos on Feb. 19, 7:30 p.m.

The Wildcats fell behind early against Homestead last week and never could make up the difference.

The Mustangs jumped to an 18-3 lead in the first period, and outscored Gatos in every period on the way to the 25-point victory.

Junior guard Kristin Ozawa led all Los Gatos scorers with 11 points in the loss. Ozawa had a three-pointer among her four field goals in the game.

Senior forward Trina Mills supported with seven points for the Wildcats. Sara Clark had four points, and Nancy Shishido, Shannon Hart, Rachelle Townsend, Royya Modir and Brett Sickler added two points each.

Homestead beat Fremont 54-34 later in the week. The Mustangs improved to 9-1 in the division and to 22-3 for the year with the two wins. They will play St. Francis for the division championship this week.
