Scholar-in-residence comes to Congregation Shir Hadash

Over the weekend of Feb. 26-27, Congregation Shir Hadash, 16555 Shannon Road, welcomes author Chana Bloch as a scholar-in-residence, highlighting this year's congregational theme of Jewish Life and the Arts. Bloch will present three programs. During Friday night services, she presents "Poetry as Midrash: Re-Imagining Genesis." On Saturday morning, Bloch offers "In the Garden of Delight: Sexuality in the Song of Songs." She wraps up the weekend Saturday afternoon with the lecture "Yehuda Amichai: An Alternative Perspective on Israel."
A poet, translator, scholar and literary critic, Bloch has published two books of poems, a critical study of George Herbert and translations of two Israeli poets. She also collaborated with Ariel Bloch on a translation of the "Song of Songs" and has translated from the Yiddish works of Isaac Bashevis Singer, Jacob Glatstein and Abraham Sutzkever. Bloch teaches poetry, Shakespeare and Biblical studies at Mills College and has won several awards for her poetry and writing.
All programs are free and open to the public. A box lunch is available between the Saturday programs for $7.50, payable in advance to the congregation. For more information, call 358-1751.
