It's ice hockey without the ice.
And when the Los Gatos roller hockey squad competed in the Rollin' Ice High School League this past season, the Wildcats iced a championship by rolling through the field at the JV league championship tournament.
The Cats wrapped up a 14-0 season with wins over Leigh, Monta Vista, Prospect and Bellarmine in the league tournament.
Senior goalie Robert Morris led the Wildcats to the championship, allowing just 20 goals in 14 games for a 1.43 goals-against average.
"Robert was by far the leading goalie among the 22 high school teams that participate in the three Rollin' Ice leagues," said Gatos coach Tim Lundell.
Freshman Jeff Scott rolled up 66 points (goals and assists) in the 10-game regular season to lead the league in scoring. Teammate Dan Lundell, a talented LG junior, was second with 46 points.
Juniors Ryan Fogarty and Justin Draa starred for the Cats in the league tournament, scoring 16 of the squad's 20 goals.
"The juniors represent the core of our team," added the coach, "combining many years of ice and roller hockey experience."
Junior Ted Chang, sophomore Chase Clock and freshman Martin Jeffries are other members of the championship Los Gatos roller hockey team.
"Hopefully, the success of our team this season will bring greater interest among younger and incoming students with roller hockey skills," said Lundell, who will now prepare for the spring season that begins in March.
