California's 22nd area code becomes mandatory for all those who let their fingers do the walking, starting Feb. 20.
Callers trying to reach Santa Cruz, Monterey and San Benito counties will no longer be able to do so with just seven digits.
The six-month grace period, during which callers could use the new designation but didn't have to, will be over for good. But for the next three months, callers who forget to dial the area code will get a polite reminder about the new codes.
The new area code will not affect the price of phone calls, which is determined by the distance and total time of the call.
