The area code formerly known as the 408

California's 22nd area code becomes mandatory for all those who let their fingers do the walking, starting Feb. 20.

Callers trying to reach Santa Cruz, Monterey and San Benito counties will no longer be able to do so with just seven digits.

The six-month grace period, during which callers could use the new designation but didn't have to, will be over for good. But for the next three months, callers who forget to dial the area code will get a polite reminder about the new codes.

The new area code will not affect the price of phone calls, which is determined by the distance and total time of the call.

    Omega sprinkler recall notice

The Santa Clara County Fire District has issued a bulletin stating that the Central Sprinkler Corporation has recalled its Omega-brand sprinkler heads.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission, after investigating reports that the sprinklers did not function in as many as 17 fires, determined that the sprinklers had a failure rate of 30 to 40 percent.

To get claims and release forms from Central Sprinkler, building owners should call the Omega hotline at 800/896-5685, or check www.omegarecall.com.
