Police warn of computer scam
The West Valley--Mission College Police Department warned faculty and staff last week to be on the lookout for a computer scam occurring in Southern California.
Contacting people at home and pretending to be a surveyor for a reputable computer company, a person asks for information about people's income and the value of their computer equipment.
Sometimes, an offer of free software is used to hook the victims. Then the scam artist asks for an address and when the victim will be home, supposedly so the free software can be installed.
Police say the scam could spread to the computer-rich Silicon Valley..
Officials warn against giving such personal information over the phone.
