Oars in the Water
The members of the Los Gatos Rowing Club have dipped their oars into the water as they prepare to open the 2002 season.
The club, 115 rowers strong, will open the season with a regatta for first-year novice competitors on March 2 at Lake Merced in San Francisco. The varsity will be in the water on March 3 for the Serra Invitational.
Los Gatos will host home regattas on March 9 and 17 at Lexington Reservoir.
Crane a champ
Nick Crane of Los Gatos rolled through the competition to win an individual championship for Bellarmine at the West Catholic Athletic League wrestling finals held Feb. 9.
Crane clinched his title with a 19-3 win over a St. Francis opponent in the finals. His effort helped the Bells win the WCAL championship.
Crane, 32-8 for the season, will now advance to the Central Coast Section championships set for Feb. 22-23 at Independence. He is one of 12 Bellarmine qualifiers as the Bells attempt to defend their CCS championship.
Will to Win
The annual "Will to Win" Asthma Athlete Scholarships will return this year, offering $100,000 in scholarships to 11 high school seniors "who have excelled in athletics in spite of the challenge of asthma."
Information on the national scholarship program is available at www.thewilltowin.org or by phone at 800.558.7305. The deadline for entries is April 30, 2002, and winners will be notified by June 2002.
Pop Warner
