If John McClintock seems to be saying: "Eeerrrrgghhh!" that's because the rowing machine, also known as an ergometer, was named in the metric world, where an erg is a measure of energy expended. On Feb. 25, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., McClintock and other members of the Los Gatos Rowing Club will participate in a row-a-thon in the Town Plaza to raise money for the ongoing effort to replace boats, equipment and boathouse destroyed by an arson fire on Memorial Day 1994. Local celebrities, including Supervisor Mike Honda and former Olympic skater Peggy Fleming, will take a turn at dry-land rowing. The club is approximately halfway to its goal of $650,000, some $140,000 of which came from insurance coverage. Santa Clara University, which also will use the boathouse, is contributing one-third of its $420,000 cost. For more information on the row-a-thon or to make a donation, contact Judy Mortenson, 354-5095.
