Auto Mall eyes the Flames site for its sales expansion

    By Nathan R. Huff

Business at the former Flames Restaurant site may soon be rekindled, but if that happens it will be with an auto dealership, not a new eatery.

The Los Gatos Auto Mall went before the Development Review Committee (DRC) to present plans to rent the former restaurant site for use as a sales and managerial office. The short-term nature of the proposed five-year lease will preclude the need to make any major structural changes, and Planning Department staff have predicted approval.

The Auto Mall, with its headquarters on Blossom Hill Road, will use the Flames site to showcase a selection of its high-end vehicles. AMG Hummers, a huge SUV modeled after a military vehicle, along with Porsches, Lamborghinis, Rolls Royces and Mercedes, will line the old restaurant parking lot.

"There were some minor deficiencies from planning and the Parks and Forestry departments," Planner Sandy Baily later said. "Once those are resolved it will be scheduled for a public hearing."

According to town project planner Gary Chao, the company needs to present a landscape plan, and the town needs to work with the Auto Mall to settle a technicality issue involving the site.

Chao said the restaurant and parking lot actually sit on two different parcels, which is inconsistent with town codes. Flames was supposed to merge the lots but never did. Now the town will have to decide whether they will require the auto dealership to merge the two parcels.

The Auto Mall intends to leave the building more or less as is, making mostly cosmetic changes to the interior of the building and adding an awning and door. The site will be strictly for sales, with all vehicle repairs and services remaining on Blossom Hill.
