    Sara Ewing

Los Gatos mountain resident Sara Katherine Cooper Ewing died Jan. 31 of cancer at the age of 63.

Ewing was born Sept. 10, 1936, in Nashville, Tenn., and moved to San Jose in 1963, following her marriage to Californian George Ewing. The couple later moved to 10 acres of property on Upper Ellen Road in the Santa Cruz Mountains. At the time, it was a 45-minute drive to the nearest town and is still one of the most remote spots in the mountain community between Los Gatos, Felton and Santa Cruz. While improving their living conditions from a trailer with no electricity to a custom-built house, Ewing taught her two young sons how to get by using candles, oil lamps, a propane stove and a generator.

Among the disasters the family weathered were the snow of 1974, the mudslides of 1982 that killed several people in the Love Creek area below the Ewing property, the Lexington fire of 1985 that destroyed more than 50 homes and the Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989.

Ewing volunteered for many years at her sons' school, Lakeside, and also served as secretary for the Upper Ellen Road Association and Mountain Bible Church. She took the latter position when the earthquake recovery process began, and spent much of her time helping displaced residents get the donations and reassurances they needed.

Ewing also helped her husband George to develop his trade in the glass business, which included part ownership of San Jose Glass for 12 years. He completed 40 years in the Glaziers Union in March 1998, when he retired.

Survivors include husband George Ewing of Los Gatos; sons Dayton Ewing of San Jose and Chris Ewing of Los Gatos; granddaughters Sara and Jessica Ewing; sister Martha Sisk and many other family members and friends in California and Tennessee.

Donations: the Sara Ewing Memorial Fund, in care of Mountain Bible Church, 23946 Summit Road, Los Gatos, 95033.
