The Prowler
When all else fails, the Prowler always seems able to find something animal-, nature- or kid-related with which to fill this column. Mere coincidence or self-fulfilling prophecy? In truth, it's a bit of both!
One of this cat's favorite nonprofit organizations, the Youth Science Institute, is springing into spring with a load of fun and educational classes. In Earth Wonders, held Feb. 28 to March 2, budding geologists can explore the rumbling and tumbling of our earth through science experiments on earthquakes and volcanoes.
From March 6 to 9, the Radical Reactions workshop lets kids experiment with different materials to see how each reacts. The young mad scientists will also get to mix a "mystery substance" and perhaps even witness a (safe) explosion! From Bee to Candle offers insights, March 13-16, on how bees produce honey and lets children make their own natural wax candles. Last class of the month is Physics Magic, from March 20-23, which reveals some of the seemingly magical qualities of physics. Cost is $12 per child per class; dates vary by age group. Call 408.356.4945 to reserve a spot, since these classes can fill up fast!
Birds and kids come together again at the Wild Bird Center at 792 Blossom Hill Road. On March 1, 8 and 10, the staff offers an hourlong program, Winter Visitors, that includes a puppet show on bird migration, a game that teaches about bird winter survival strategies and a project of crafting pine-cone seed feeders for hanging in the yard. As with the YSI, dates and times vary, depending on age groups. The fee is $5 per child. Call 408.358.9453 for all the particulars.
