    Homeless woman raped downtown

    By Leigh Ann Maze

A 59-year-old homeless woman was raped behind the shops in Old Town at 31 University Avenue on Feb. 16, according to the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department. She was approached by a man around 3:30 a.m. who engaged her in small talk, the police report said. The man then struck the woman down with a blow to the jaw and raped her. The suspect left the area on foot and his identity and whereabouts are unknown.

After the sexual assault, the woman walked several blocks to the Toll House, where she had friends, according to Sgt. Michael Barbieri. From the Toll House, the LG-MSPD was called out to take a report. The woman described the suspect as a white male, approximately 5 feet, 10 inches tall, weighing 180 pounds with thin, light-colored hair and small, tan patches of skin on his face.

The woman is staying at a shelter. Although the police suspected her jaw might have been broken, a doctor who examined her determined that it was not.

The police are hoping to release a sketch of the man with the victim's help. This is the first reported rape this year in Los Gatos. One rape was reported in 1999 and there were six reported rapes in Los Gatos in 1998, according to LG-MSPD crime statistics.

Anyone with information about the suspect should contact the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department at 408.354.8600.
