Gatos, Leigh soccer teams eliminated in CCS playoffs

    By Dick Sparrer

The Los Gatos and Leigh soccer teams were eliminated from Central Coast Section playoff competition last week--the Gatos boys and Leigh girls in the first round, and the Leigh boys in the quarterfinals.

The Longhorns opened the CCS Division I boys playoffs with a tight 3-2 win over Menlo-Atherton, but they lost a close 2-1 nod to Willow Glen in the quarters.

Junior forward Mark Katayama scored a first-half goal off an assist from sophomore forward Edison Nazlou to give Leigh a 1-0 lead at intermission, but Willow Glen scored two goals in the second half to claim the 2-1 win last Saturday.

Earlier in the week, Leigh had scored three first-half goals to beat M-A. Kevin Boucher, a junior midfielder, scored unassisted to give Leigh a 1-0 lead, then freshman David Brenner scored off a Katayama assist, and junior midfielder Pete Pries scored off an assist from sophomore defender Nick Murdick.

The loss to Willow Glen ended Leigh's season at 12-4-6.

The Los Gatos boys dropped a tough 1-0 nod to St. Ignatius in the CCS Division II event. The Wildcats ended the year with an 8-6-7 record.

The Leigh girls were blanked 3-0 by Monta Vista in the first round of the CCS Division I playoffs. The Lady Longhorns finished the season 9-6-6.
