Pease and Joseph lead Cats to CCS mat finals
By Dick Sparrer
Most coaches will take a group of wrestlers to the Central Coast Section championships at Independence High School this weekend.
But not Los Gatos coach Jeff Garlick... he's taking an entire team!
Los Gatos qualified 12 wrestlers in the 14 weight classes for the CCS tournament, and that large contingent of competitors should make the Wildcats competitive in the team aspect of the CCS event.
"I expect us to be in the top 10," said Garlick, "and I think we have a legitimate shot at about seventh."
Of course, with wrestlers in 12 of the 14 weight classes, Gatos could finish even higher with a few strong individual showings at the section finals.
Garlick is expecting big things from league champions Andrew Pease (140) and Dae-Jin Joseph (119). But it's difficult to predict how well the wrestlers will do because "CCS is so dang tough," said the coach.
Pease and Joseph will lead the contingent of a dozen LG wrestlers that will compete in the CCS finals set for Feb. 25 and 26 at Independence.
Wrestling begins Friday at 9 a.m. and continues through Saturday. The medal rounds begins at 2 p.m. Saturday with the championship finals set for 5 p.m.
Pease, a junior, pinned in the 140-pound final at the league tournament to win his title, and Joseph won 6-3 in his last match to claim the 119-pound crown.
Joining the two at the CCS finals will be seniors James Pease (third at 152 pounds at the league finals), Matt Kanzler (fifth at 189) and Ian Carpenter (fourth at 275); juniors David Serwitz (third at 145) and Jerry Yuhara (third at 160); sophomores Richard Escobar (second at 171) and Evan McDonald (fifth at 215); and freshmen Matthew Nudelman (third at 103), Adam Morganthaler (second at 112) and Brian Miguel (second at 130).
