Lice on the loose at Lakeside

Head lice remain a problem among some students at Lakeside Elementary School. Although most students with lice have already been treated with medicated shampoo, daily head-checks by school personnel have uncovered a few students who have unhatched or hatched louse eggs--also called nits--in their hair. Any student with more than five lice or nits will be sent home for treatment, as head lice spread easier from person to person. School personnel urge parents to continue checking their children before sending them to school. Washing clothing and pillows and vacuuming the house also help prevent reinfestation.

Spelling bee champ will compete in San Francisco

Fifth-grader Joey Auricchio took top honors at the San Francisco Examiner Spelling Bee, held Jan. 24 at Louise Van Meter School. Joey, along with more than 50 fourth- and fifth-graders, competed in a written bee, after which the field was narrowed down to a dozen top spellers who competed in an oral bee. First runner-up among those students was Matthew Finelli. The others who made it to the oral bee were Aileen Aranovsky, Max Benesi, Mallory Carlson, Laney Chinn, Lindsay Funston, Greg Geldman, Matt Herrick, Jeffrey Huang, Shana Ravel and Chloe Wilder. As winner, Joey will go on to compete at the regional spelling bee in San Francisco in late February. The regional bee's winner will be flown to Washington, D.C., to compete in the 70th Annual National Spelling Bee, scheduled for late spring.
