Schools' attendance area could be redrawn

By Shari Kaplan

The Los Gatos Union School District Board of Trustees and Interim Superintendent Steve Peck on Feb. 14 discussed how possible boundary changes around the Summerhill Homes development could affect attendance at Daves Avenue and Van Meter schools.

Summerhill, the new name of the former Vasona Hills project across from Vasona Park on Blossom Hill Road, currently falls within the boundaries of Daves Avenue School, the district's largest and most crowded school.

At the board meeting, LGUSD business manager Mike Brandy suggested to trustees that the approximately 30 Summerhill homes be designated as within the Van Meter attendance area, as Van Meter is currently the downtown elementary school with the smallest enrollment. Concern over an overpopulated Daves Avenue was also an issue in April 1991, when the board approved an action to redesignate certain attendance areas to send more students to Van Meter and Blossom Hill schools. This helped slow Daves Avenue's growth.

The board of trustees will include a public hearing on the proposed change at its March 13 meeting. If there is no dissent, the board will take action on whether to change the boundary for the 1996-97 school year, thus giving prospective Summerhill home buyers knowledge ahead of time regarding the elementary school their children would attend.
