Water level dropped at Vasona Lake Park
Vasona Lake's water level has been lowered by 7 feet as a precautionary measure against dam-gate breakage.
The water level was drawn down at the request of the state's Division of Dam Safety following last summer's gate break at Folsom Dam, which has a radial-arm gate design similar to Vasona's. The gate at Vasona needs to be replaced, and lowering the water level decreases pressure on the dam's structure.
Santa Clara Valley Water District officials say Vasona's gate is in no immediate danger of failing.
Until repairs to the dam are completed and the water level is brought back up, no boats will be able to launch onto Vasona Lake because the launch ramp is in an area affected by the draw-down. The water district and the Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Department are developing a repair plan for the dam.
