Ten Los Gatos High School seniors have qualified as finalists in the 1996 National Merit Scholarship Program, which takes into account academic ability, college potential, teacher recommendations, leadership roles and high SAT test scores. As finalists in the Merit Program competition, Nicole Carlson, Alison Hendrix, Yuta Kurahashi, Dan Levy, Yvonne Lin, Genever McBain, Rory McCloskey, Luc Morris, Rose Snyder and
Douglas Stillinger have the opportunity to earn one of 2,000 National Merit Scholarships. More than 1,000 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards will also be available.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation will announce the winners in April or May.

High-school students can win up to $300 in prizes in the American Lung Association's Clean Air Billboard Contest, an opportunity for them to express their ideas for making the air more breathable. Prizes will be awarded to the top three designers during the sixth annual Clean Air Award luncheon, held May 31 at the San Jose Athletic Club; the top 25 designs will be on display during the lunch-eon. Additionally, Gannett Outdoor Co. will display the first-place winner's design on five of its outdoor billboards. Entries must be received by March 29. For more information, call 998-5864.

Fisher Middle School students scored much higher than the state average in the Golden State Exam, a math-skills test given to first-year algebra students. Approximately 88 percent of Fisher's algebra students received special recognition and honors for their exam performances, as compared to the California average of 30 percent.

The Los Gatos Elementary Education Foundation has voted to approve an additional $6,000 grant to benefit the Los Gatos Union School District. The monies will help schools purchase new music equipment and musical instruments for student use, provide for repairs of existing equipment and fund the annual music tour of the district's band.

Eleven authors and illustrators of children's books will give presentations during Blossom Hill School's Author's Faire on March 8. Kindergartners through fifth-graders will have a chance to talk to the individuals, learn about writing or drawing and have copies of their books autographed. Each author will be joined by a few students for lunch as well. Participants are Joan Cottle, Joe Cottonwood, Nancy Raines Day, Dayle Dodds, Joy Hulme, Martha Kendall, Patricia Kite, Alan Schroeder, Maxine Rose Schur, Aaron Shepard and Morrie Turner.

The Los Gatos High School PTSA sponsors a parent visitation day on March 7 for parents of high-school students and eighth-graders and other interested adult members of the community. The school day begins at 7:45 a.m. with 50-minute class periods; visitors should arrive 15 minutes prior to the beginning of the class they wish to attend. An information table will be set up outside the school's main office, where visitors can pick up class schedules and maps of the campus.
