Local Scout earns Eagle rank
Andrew Tumason, son of Los Gatos mountain residents Paul and Kathy Tumason, has earned the highest mark of achievement in the Boys Scouts of America--the Eagle Scout honor. His Eagle community service project was the refurbishing of A Place for Teens with the support of the center's vice president, Lee Fagot.
In order to begin an Eagle project, a Boy Scout must earn at least 23 merit badges. Among the badges Andrew earned were first aid, rifle shooting, cooking, lifesaving, pioneering, wilderness survival, swimming, camping, personal management and communications. A member of Monterey County's Troop 603, Andrew has been active in Scouting since the first grade.
"Scouting has taught me to keep my head up high, have courage and believe in myself," he says. "I've learned to live to the best of my ability and accept things while keeping an optimistic attitude."
An experienced pianist and member of the Los Gatos Rowing Club, Andrew is a senior at Bellarmine College Preparatory. When he goes to college next fall, he plans to major in engineering and geology. He says he also plans to give back to the Boy Scouts by volunteering in some capacity.
