The Fisher eighth-grade basketball team celebrates after winning the West Valley Athletic League championship.

Fisher eighth-graders win league hoop title

By Dick Sparrer

The Fisher eighth-graders don't know much about losing.

Why would they? In their three years at the Los Gatos middle school they've only lost four basketball games.

And just a couple of those four losses came this year as the Fisher Middle School eighth-grade boys' basketball team rolled to a West Valley Athletic League championship.

Fisher posted a 9-1 league record, then backed that up with a pair of wins in the WVAL tournament. Fisher knocked off Campbell Middle School, then edged Monroe 43-42 in the championship game. Fisher's only loss in league play was a heartbreaking defeat in overtime.

The locals had finished fifth in the 16-team San Jose Mayor's Tournament earlier in the year. Chris Eagen was named to the all-tournament team at the rugged event.

Eagen, Chris McMorrow and Trent Edwards were voted the team's most valuable players this winter after leading Fisher to a third straight outstanding season.

In three middle school seasons, this group of basketball players posted a 39-4 record, winning two championships and finishing second the other year.

Joining Eagen, McMorrow and Edwards on the championship team this season were Jayson Furia, Matt Cooke, Stephen Sweeney, Gino Gingery, Mike Dixon, Chip Virnig, Jason Yuki, Chris Willard, Stuart Gordon, David Fencl, Eric Medefesser and Brian Demarais.
