    Heather Corini attends leadership conference

The Congressional Youth Leadership Council chose Heather Corini, a Los Gatos High School junior and alumna of Lexington Elementary School, as one of 350 students nationwide to attend the National Young Leaders Conference. The conference, which took place in Washington, D.C., from Feb. 19 to Feb. 24, is a leadership development program for high school students who demonstrate leadership potential and scholastic merit.

Throughout the six-day conference, which was themed "The Leaders of Tomorrow Meeting the Leaders of Today," students interacted with leaders and newsmakers from the three branches of government, the media and the diplomatic corps. Students even met with senators, representatives and their appointed staff members to discuss important issues that face the nation.

Students participated in several leadership-building activities, which included a role-play activity known as "If I Were President." In this activity, students acted as presidents and cabinet members who responded to international crises. Students also participated in a judicial simulation called "Testing the Constitution," in which they examined actual Supreme Court cases, and a simulation called "Model Congress," in which they assumed the roles of U.S. representatives and debated, amended and voted on proposed mock legislation.
