THE PROWLER

Numerous members of the Prowler's pride have celebrated significant birthdays of late. First, there was the nephew, who turned 7 on the Saturday it snowed for five minutes. It didn't matter to him that there wasn't enough white stuff on the ground to scrape together a proper snowball: The fact that flakes were falling at all was inducement for him to declare with a joyous shout that "This is the best birthday ever!"

Hold on there, young fella; you ain't seen nuthin' yet. Just ask the Prowler's mate, who turned the big 3-0 last week with a little help from our friends. Demonstrating an adult sense of responsibility--it was, after all, a school night--the mate eschewed offers of cake and champagne and invited people over for coffee and pie instead. But corks will be popping this weekend, so to speak, when nobody has to be up early the next morning.

Last, but certainly not least, the Prowler's stepdad turned 60 on March 4 (this cat has always thought that was a great date for a birthday, as he did, in fact, march forth into the world on that day), and our ever-extending family surprised him with dinner at his favorite Mexican restaurant. We told silly stories, showed old photos and generally embarrassed the poor man to death. After all, what else are families for?

The Prowler's hair salon of choice is also celebrating a birthday this month: Nirvana turns five on March 17 and will throw a proper party to mark the event. The bash will also be a reception for photographer William Stanley, whose work will grace Nirvana's walls through June 15.

While the Prowler has had the fur shampooed and blow-dried at Nirvana, this cat has never been to one of the salon's art openings (they put up a new show every season). The mate has, though, and says they've been memorable parties. The fifth-anniversary celebration is set for 4-10 p.m. at 224-B N. Santa Cruz Ave.
