McAlister back to defend El Camino singles title
By Dick Sparrer
William McAlister may be just a sophomore, but the Los Gatos tennis player enters the 2001 season with some rather impressive credentials.
McAlister is the defending singles champion in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League, winning the title as a Gatos freshman. And he returns as a sophomore hoping to help the Wildcats improve on a second-place finish in the division team standings a year ago.
McAlister will lead what head coach Carol Kane considers a youth movement on the tennis courts at Los Gatos. A cast of solid freshman players will join McAlister and four other veterans to make up what Kane hopes will be a team that can contend for the El Camino crown.
"This year we have some talented freshmen joining the team," said Kane, singling out Lee Gerston, Drew Frohlich and Victory Larsson as freshman prospects.
"William will return as a sophomore in the No. 1 singles position," said Kane of McAlister, who qualified for the Central Coast Section tournament last spring with his El Camino title.
Seniors Michael Franchi and Adam Clark each return for a fourth varsity season. Junior Thomas Helloboid is back for his third varsity campaign, and sophomore Geoff Hubbard is another varsity letterman.
"They are all returning varsity players," said Kane of the four. "They will add experience and depth to the team."
Franchi and Helloboid are expected to play singles for the Cats with Hubbard and Clark playing doubles.
The freshmen figure to be key players for the Wildcats this spring.
"[Gerston] will add some depth to our singles as he begins the season in a singles position," said Kane. "[Frohlich and Larsson] will add depth to our doubles ladder."
Sophomore David Reagan and senior Brandon Fong are other top prospects for the Wildcats.
"[Reagan] worked hard in the off-season and moved into a varsity doubles position," said Kane.
Los Gatos opened the year by suffering a 6-1 loss to powerful Saratoga last week. Only Larsson could manage a win for the Wildcats, claiming a 7-5, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles.
The Cats will return to the court this week, weather permitting, to visit Wilcox on Monday, to host Cupertino on March 6 and to head to Mountain View on March 8. Matches begin at 3:15 p.m.
