Los Gatos Weekly-TimesCuevas, Wallis top golfersBy Dick Sparrer It's a tough job, but... well, you know how that goes. No sooner did Jim Marino walk off the court after a successful high school basketball season than he stepped onto the course as the Los Gatos golf coach. And right away he was leading his Los Gatos golfers into action against Monta Vista and Saratoga. The Wildcats, co-champions with Wilcox and Mountain View in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League last season, opened the year by battling Monta Vista to a 212-212 tie at LaRinconada before losing to the Falcons 198-203 at the Saratoga Country Club. Returning all-leaguers Matt Cuevas and Marcia Wallis fired matching 39s to finish five over par and lead the Wildcats to the tie against the Matadors. Kyle Detrick carded a 44 for the Wildcats, and Sean McIntyre and Jon Stapleton each finished with a 45. Things didn't go quite as well for Los Gatos against Saratoga, even though the Wildcats came through with better scores on the Saratoga course. Cuevas shot a two-over 35 to lead the Los Gatos effort against the Falcons. Wallis, Stapleton and Gavin Stavis each shot 41s, and McIntyre finished at 45. All six Los Gatos golfers return from last year's squad, which posted a 12-4 record and tied for the league title. And Marino expects his Wildcats to contend for the crown again this year, predicting a top three finish for the Cats. Cuevas and Wallis return after winning all-league honors last spring. Wallis, a junior, was the girls' Central Coast Section champion and finished second in Northern California. Cuevas was a CCS qualifier for Gatos.
