Coffee with the mayor in Monte Sereno

Monte Sereno Mayor Suzanne Jackson will hold an informal Coffee with the mayor Friday, March 13, at 9.30 a.m. in City Hall.

All Monte Sereno residents are invited to come and discuss whatever topics might be on their minds, or just meet with the mayor in a relaxed setting.

Among other considerations, Monte Sereno is currently in the process of updating its zoning codes.

Population on the rise, according to the county

Don't pay attention to the signs on the edge of town. New population figures are out.

The population of Los Gatos grew by 9 percent between 1990 and 1997, increasing from 27,357 to 29,700 residents, according to figures recently released by the county planning office.

Including unincorporated areas within the town limits, the total population of the town is about 34,000, a figure expected to rise to 36,300 by 2020, the report stated.

Monte Sereno's population increased only 2 percent, to 3,360.

The county as a whole grew by 10 percent, with the cities of Milpitas and Morgan Hill increasing the most; both had booming growth rates of more than 20 percent. San Jose accounted for almost 60 percent of total growth countywide, with 91,052 new residents, but the city's growth rate was 12 percent. The total county population is 1,653,135.

The 1997 figures are based on information from the state Department of Finance's Demographic Research Unit, and the 1990 numbers are from the U.S. Census.
