The Santa Clara Valley Chapter of the Brandeis University National Women's Committee will host its seventh annual "Lunch with the Authors" on March 13, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at La Rinconada Country Club in Los Gatos.
This year's luncheon features four local writers whose books offer new and challenging ways to look at modern life. Frank Andrews, author of The Art and Practice of Loving, is a UC-Santa Cruz chemistry professor. His book is an interactive guide to experiencing loving in everyday life and the growth of the human spirit.
Walter M. Bortz II, a practicing medical doctor, is a leader in the field of health and aging. His books Dare to be 100 and We Live Too Short and Die Too Long offer tips for living a long and full life.
India-born Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni has followed her popular short-story collection, Arranged Marriage, with her first novel, The Mistress of Spices. She also teaches creative writing at Foothill College.
Pamela Gullard's debut collection of short stories, Breathe at Every Other Stroke, portrays contemporary life in fractured families where traditional standards no longer seem to apply. Gullard teaches private workshops on the art of short story writing.
The authors will speak about their books before lunch and will answer audience questions following dessert. Books will be available for purchase and book-signing.
Tickets are $45 each, with a March 5 deadline. Proceeds from the luncheon benefit Brandeis University's Library Work Scholar Program, which offers scholarships for students in the university's library system. For more information, call 867-7716.
