    McAlister, Brogan top tennis list

    By Dick Sparrer

Will McAlister and Brian Brogan are ranked among the finest young tennis players in Northern California.

And with the two playing at the top of the ladder for the Los Gatos boys tennis team this spring, the Wildcats should figure to be one of the top teams in the Central Coast Section.

McAlister, a junior and two-time league champion, leads the Gatos effort along with Brogan, a talented freshman. The two are each rated in the top 15 in the USTA NorCal rankings.

The pair have helped the Cats jump out to a 2-1 start in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League. The Wildcats have edged Gunn and Lynbrook, winning each match 4-3, but lost 5-2 to perennial powerhouse Monta Vista.

McAlister won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and Brogan won 7-6 (8), 6-4 at No. 2 to lead the Cats to the 4-3 win over the Titans. Sophomore Victor Larssen supported with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles and junior David Reagan teamed with soph Lee Gerston for a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles.

McAlister won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Gerston won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 and Larssen won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 in the 4-3 win over Lynbrook last week. Reagan joined forces with senior Umair Bajwa for a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles.

The only loss for the Cats this season was a 5-2 setback against Monta Vista. McAlister won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and Brogan won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2, but it wasn't enough for Los Gatos.

The Wildcats, now 5-1 for the year, had opened the season with a tight 4-3 win over Bellarmine. Brogan, Gerston and Larssen won in singles play and Reagan and senior Thomas Helleboid won in doubles competition.

Los Gatos will be back on the court this week, visiting Palo Alto on March 12 .
