Tough one-run losses for Cats LG falls to league's best
By Dick Sparrer
Any way you look at it, Los Gatos was going to face the best team in the league last week.
It was a very tough week. The Wildcats were to open up against second-place Wilcox, the club most coaches pick as the title favorite in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League this spring.
And they were to finish the week against Cupertino, the team currently surprising everyone by remaining atop the pack three weeks into the league race.
As it turns out, it was more than a tough week for the Wildcats--it was a heartbreaking week. Los Gatos played both clubs tough, but lost two one-run decisions to slip to 1-4 in the division.
"It's dog eat dog," said Los Gatos coach Wayne Senini of the De Anza Division. "And we've got to stay within striking distance if we're going to make the playoffs."
The two one-run losses did little to help the Wildcats in that bid. Los Gatos lost a tough 3-2 nod to Wilcox to open the week. Junior Mike Cook tossed a strong game for the Wildcats and ripped a solo homer, but the Cats came up a run short. Andy Housley chipped in with a double in the four-hit Gatos attack.
The Wildcats lost another tough one on Friday when they dropped an 8-7 nod to first-place Cupertino.
Jeff Ouellet had two hits to knock in a pair of runs, and Cook added a pair of singles.
The Cats will host Monta Vista on March 24 and Cupertino on March 26 in a pair of 3:30 p.m. games.
