Netters fall to Falcons, Eagles
Tennis team tries to get back on winning track
By Dick Sparrer
It was close, but the Los Gatos tennis team beat both Gunn and Palo Alto on the first trip through the 2002 schedule in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
Now Gatos coach Todd Dissly is hoping that his Wildcats can do it again.
The Wildcats edged the Titans and Vikings by matching 4-3 scores in the first round of the season in the De Anza Division. And if they can do it again this week, it will get the Cats back on the winning track in division play.
Los Gatos slipped off the victory wagon last week, dropping 5-2 decisions to both Saratoga and Los Altos. The two losses left the Cats 3-3 in the division and 6-4 for the year.
The Wildcats face three matches this week, and need at least a couple of victories to get back over the .500 mark.
Gatos hosted Gunn on March 26, 2:30 p.m., and will entertain Paly on March 27, 3 p.m. A day later, Los Gatos will travel to Monta Vista for a 3:30 p.m. match. The Cats lost to the powerful Matadors 5-2 early in the league season.
Los Gatos won just a pair of matches in the 5-2 loss to Los Altos to open the week. Freshman Brian Brogan pulled out a hard-earned 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) win at No. 2 singles, and sophomore Victor Larssen won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
Soph Lee Gerston dropped a tough three-set nod at No. 4 singles, losing a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 heartbreaker.
Gatos No. 1 singles star Will McAlister had a tough week. The two-time league champion lost twice on the week, falling 6-4, 6-4 against Los Altos and losing a tough three-setter to Saratoga's A.J. Kerin 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 on Thursday.
