Large coffee chain offers green instead of cream

Supporting the community that, in turn, supports Starbucks Coffee Company with business has been part of the company's modus operandi since it opened its first coffeehouse in San Francisco in 1992.
Throughout the years Starbucks has donated coffee, food and dollars to nonprofit organizations and local causes and encouraged volunteerism among its employee/partners. Now Starbucks has launched Bay Area Grants for Giving.
The new program will showcase and support four Bay Area nonprofits and charitable agencies by awarding each a $100,000 grant. The winners will be announced this July.
"Giving back to our communities is the way we do business," says Gina Marino, Starbucks' regional vice president for the San Francisco Bay Area. "We want to be a good neighbor and active contributor in the communities where our partners and customers work, live and play."
The grants will be awarded to organizations involved in such causes as arts and culture, literacy, AIDS, environmentalism and youth. An award will be made in each of the Bay Area's four regions: North Bay, South Bay, East Bay and San Francisco. Additionally, four other nonprofits will be recognized with grants of $5,000 each.
Grants for Giving application criteria are available at any Bay Area Starbucks location, or by calling 800.535.GIVE.
