Sliding safely into third in last week's clash with Gunn is Joey Warren of Los Gatos. Warren may have been safe on this play, but the Wildcats lost a 7-6 heartbreaker to the Titans to slip to 1-5 in the De Anza Division.

Two more tough losses last week dropped the Los Gatos baseball team to just a half game out of the cellar in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

The Wildcats lost a 4-1 decision to Milpitas to open the week, then dropped a 7-6 heartbreaker to powerful Gunn on Friday.

The two losses dropped the Cats to 1-5 in the division, leaving them just a half game ahead of last-place Monta Vista. The Matadors beat Saratoga 11-1 on Friday to move to 1-6 in league play.

Los Gatos gave Gunn all it could handle last week, but the Titans battled from behind to pull out the victory. Gunn is now 6-1 in league play.

"We were right there," said Gatos coach Don Ardissone.

The Wildcats took the early lead with three runs in the first and that's how it remained until the fifth when the Titans unloaded for six runs to take a 6-3 lead.

Gatos kept fighting back, though. The Cats picked up two in the home half of the fifth, one of them on a solo homer by Ben Shanker, then tied it with a run in the sixth.

But Gunn scored the run that would prove the game winner in the seventh.

The Cats threatened in the bottom of the seventh when Markus Willard doubled and moved to third with one out. But a strikeout and a groundout ended the game.

Willard singled and doubled in the game and Travis Howell also doubled for Gatos.

Earlier in the week, Steve Sweeney's double was the only hit Los Gatos could manage in a 4-1 loss to Milpitas.

The Wildcats, 4-8 for the year, will try to get back on the winning track this week when they visity Saratoga on March 28, 3:30 p.m., and host first-place Wilcox on March 30, 3:30 p.m.

"I'm still very optimistic," said Ardissone. "We have two more games with everyone in the league. I'm very confident."

    Cats net two wins

Williams McAlister won twice at No. 1 singles to lead the Los Gatos boys tennis team to back-to-back wins over Cupertino and Santa Clara in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL.

McAlister won 6-0, 6-0 to spark the Cats to a 5-2 win over Cupertino, and he came back with a 6-0, 6-2 win in a 7-0 win over Santa Clara.

The Cats are now 7-0 in the division and 7-1 for the year.

    Clark leads Cats

Charlie Clark carded a five-over par 39 to lead the Los Gatos golf team to a 203-234 win over Wilcox last week at the LaRinconada Country Club.

The Wildcats traveled to the Santa Clara Golf and Tennis Club later in the week to beat the Chargers 205-210 on their home course.

The Cats are now 4-0 in the De Anza Division and 6-1 for the year.

    Cats open league

The Los Gatos boys volleyball team will open the league season this week when they visit Mountain View on March 27 and Fremont on March 29 for a pair of 7 p.m. matches in the De Anza Division of the SCVAL.
