    Bates, Caldwell run to St. Francis wins

    Matt Bates and Ashley Caldwell each ran well for Los Gatos in a dual meet against Wilcox last week.

    Then they ran great at the St. Francis Invitational in Mountain View on Saturday.

    Bates raced to a win in the 1,500 meters and Caldwell romped to a first in the 800 to lead the Los Gatos effort at the weekend invitational.

    Bates covered the four laps of the 1,500 in 4:04.4 to lead the Los Gatos boys showing at St. Francis. Tomas Viramontes supported with a fourth-place finish in the event in 4:12.9.

    The Gatos foursome of Seung Lee, Payam Mokhtari, Brian Edwards and Jeff Hoeft raced to a third in the sprint medley relay in 1:37.26. Edwards ran a blistering 22.2 split in the 200 and Hoeft ran an impressive 51.3 in the 400 in the final two relay legs.

    Caldwell led a solid girls showing at the invitational. She was first in the 800 in 2:17.18, and she teamed with Simone Drucker, Heather Hennessy and Carolyn Penner for a first in the 4x400 relay in 3:57.68.

    Penner finished third in the 400 in 58.74 for the Cats with Michelle Beritzhoff third in the 1,500 in 4:52.98 and freshman Sally Stanton fifth in the 300 hurdles in 50.53.

    Kristen Fumia, Aly Dodson, Aly Chavez and Meghan Kirby-McFarland teamed to finish third in the girls sprint medley in 1:50.8. Chavez ran a 25.5 200 and Kirby-McFarland anchored with a 59.9 400.

    Earlier in the week the Wildcats had romped to a couple of wins over Wilcox. The Gatos boys ran to a 78-45 win over the Chargers and the girls ran past Wilcox 67-47.

    Bates and Nik Kay were each double winners as the Los Gatos boys ran to their second straight dual meet win in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League season.

    Bates cruised to a first in the mile in 4:37.9 with Viramontes second in 4:41.5, and Bates was a winner in the 800 in 1:56.1 with Viramontes second in 2:00.6. Bates added a third in the high jump at 5-6.

    Kay hurled the shot put 46-6 1/2 for a first and won the discus with a heave of 132-7 1/2. Nick Skrabe was second in the discus (131-10) and third in the shot (43-8), and Matt McNerney was second in the shot (46-0 1/2) and third in the discus (124-4).

    Edwards soared to a win in the long jump at 19-3 and raced to a second in the 100 in 11.36, and Hoeft was a winner in the 400 in 51.47 and finished second in the 200 in 23.90.

    Peter Baunach flew to a first in the high jump at 5-8, Lee took the 110 high hurdles in 15.96 and Mokhtari won the 300 intermediate hurdles in 43.3.

    Darren Key was second in the 2-mile in 11:03 with Jason Yuki third in 11:22.8, Lee was third in the 100 in 11.58 and Dan Leis was third in the 200 in 25.3.

    Caldwell and double-winner Heather Davis sparked the Los Gatos girls to the win over Wilcox. The Wildcats are now 3-0 in the division.

    Caldwell raced to an easy win in the 400 meters in 59.60 with Kristi Yackle third in 1:04.4.

    Davis dominated the weight events for the Cats, winning the discus with a toss of 96-3 and the shot with a heave of 26-1. Sandy Runyan was second in the shot (24-0 1/2) and third in the discus (69-9).

    Beritzhoff led a one-two-three sweep for Gatos in the mile. The junior star was first in 5:21.5 with Lynsey Harris second (5:34.8) and Erica Williams third (5:41).

    Dodson was first in the 100 in 12.65 with Fumia second in 12.93, and Drucker was first in the 200 in 26.8 with Fumia third in 27.7.

    Penner was a winner in the 800 in 2:28.6 with Laura Rossmassler third in 2:55.4, Lynsey Erickson won the long jump at 15-3 with Kim Christiansen third at 14-4, and Stanton took the 300 hurdles in 51.0.

    Kristen Turner was second in the 100 low hurdles in 17.8, and Laney Chin was second in the high jump at 5-0 with Rossmassler third at 4-10.

    The Wildcats will be back in league action this week when they visit Lynbrook on March 27 and host Los Altos on March 29 in a pair of 3 p.m. starts. The Cats will head to the Stanford Invitational on Saturday.
