The Prowler
Sometimes parents and kids get along; other times they don't.
The former is the case with Paula Smith Alder and daughter Jessica, owners of Smith Alder, a women's clothing, jewelry and art boutique in the Los Gatos Opera House at 140 W. Main St.
Although Jessica was just a junior high schooler when her mother opened the shop, she is now a working partner who shares in the buying and decision-making. The pair celebrate Smith Alder's fifth anniversary with a five-day celebration and sale, which runs April 2-6. Mother and daughter also share a love of charity, contributing time and money to local nonprofits like Montalvo, Valle Monte League, WomenCARE and the Avon Breast Cancer Walk.
Speaking of local groups, the Friends of Los Gatos Community Theatre is throwing an event it calls the Spring Renaissance Festival on April 20, 5-7:30 p.m., at 550 Hubble Way. For $60 per person, visitors get wine, hors d'oeuvres and a performance by Festival Theatre Ensemble, an amazing local acting troupe. The event is a fundraiser for the Los Gatos Shakespeare Festival, coming later this year. For tickets, call 408.354.8787.
Although the Foothill Garden Club's annual plant sale on April 12 and 13 is not local, much of its greenery is! This tip is courtesy of one Charles Holtz, who enclosed the following note with his publicity flyer: "The majority of our members reside and raise these plants in the general area of Highway 9, from Cupertino to Saratoga to Los Gatos." The eclectic sale is at the Rancho Shopping Center in Los Altos. Gardeners and plant fans of all skill levels are welcome in the club. For more info, call 408.252.0665 or 408.257.8538.
