Three more wins for Gatos tennis team

    By Dick Sparrer

It wasn't even a league match.

But Los Gatos boys tennis coach Carol Kane was as happy after a 4-3 nonleague win over Wilcox last week as she would have been had the Wildcats just won the division championship.

    Well, almost.

Kane was pleased with the way her Wildcats capped a big week with the tight win over the Chargers, despite battling a flu bug and two missing courts at Los Gatos.

Geoff Hubbard was out with the flu and No. 1 singles star William McAlister was bothered by a touch of the illness later in the week, but the Wildcats still managed to beat Homestead 4-3, Fremont 6-1 and Wilcox 4-3.

"It was an exciting week of tennis for [Los Gatos]," said Kane after the three wins. "This team has really pulled together."

"They work hard at every practice, competing in every drill and practice match," she added. "Some matches have come down to conditioning and their effort in practices has really paid off."

What's more, the Wildcats have rallied together this spring, a factor that Kane feels has helped her squad jump out to a 9-1 start.

"Some matches have finished at 7 p.m. because of the lack of two courts at Los Gatos," said Kane. "The entire team stays until the end, supporting their teammates."

Gatos improved to 9-1 with the 4-3 win over Wilcox last week on the LG courts. The Wildcats play in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League, and the Chargers play in the De Anza Division.

McAlister rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles to start the Wildcats on the road to the win over the Chargers.

"[He] won strong despite coming down with the flu that morning," said Kane.

Lee Gerston won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 singles, and Michael Franchi came through with a big win at No. 3 singles.

Victor Larsson and Adam Clark teamed for a crucial 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles.

Brandon Fong and David Reagan lost a hard-fought 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 decision at No. 2 doubles and Drew Frohlich and Thomas Helleboid lost a tough 6-7, 6-2, 7-6 nod at No. 3.

Hubbard was out with the flu for that match, just as he had been a day earlier against Fremont. But Los Gatos pulled out a 6-1 win over the Firebirds.

McAlister cruised to a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles, Gerston won 6-4, 7-6 at No. 2 and Franchi won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3.

    Doubles wins went to Larsson-Clark at No. 1 (6-0, 6-2), Fong-Reagan at No. 2 (6-0, 6-1) and Frohlich-Helleboid at No. 3 (6-1,6-3).

Los Gatos opened the week with an exciting 4-3 win over Homestead.

McAlister won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and Larsson won 6-3, 7-5 at No. 4.

Gerston went three sets for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles, and Fong and Reagan won in three sets 7-5, 6-7, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles to help secure the win for the Wildcats.

The Cats, 9-0 in the El Camino Division and 9-1 for the year, will be back on the courts this week to visit Milpitas on April 3, 3 p.m., and host Mountain View on April 4, 3 p.m.
