Arbor Day recognition
Los Gatos will receive a Tree City U.S.A. award at the April 15 Town Council meeting.
The National Arbor Day Foundation awards the title to cities that have a tree-protection ordinance, have a tree board or department, operate a community forestry program and observe Arbor Day. Los Gatos has received the title for 16 consecutive years.
The town will observe Arbor Day on April 25 by planting a mature oak tree near the Civic Center at 10a.m., in the spot where a mighty oak fell behind the Police Department during the winter of 1995.
Students from Van Meter, Blossom Hill, Daves Avenue and St. Mary's schools will help plant the tree and will serve cookies and sodas. The Los Gatos Rotary Club provided the funding to move and plant the mature oak.
Firefighting improved
Los Gatans may pay less for fire insurance now that the Insurance Service Office has upgraded the Central Fire District to a Class 2 rating from a Class 3, Fire Chief Douglas Sporleder said.
The better rating reflects improvements in the district's ability to fight fires since its last rating 10 years ago.
The district provides fire and paramedic services to Campbell, Cupertino, Monte Sereno, Morgan Hill, Saratoga, Los Gatos and some unincorporated areas of Santa Clara County.
Council agenda
Items on the April 15 Town Council agenda include the appeal of a Planning Commission decision approving a sunroom and gazebo at 16268 Los Gatos Road and approving retail/restaurant use on the property.
The council also will hear a request to change the conditional-use permit for Hannegan's Restaurant, 208 Bachman Ave., to allow an outdoor fireplace and retractable awning.
For a complete agenda, call the Town Clerk at 354-6834.
