Livingston double lifts Mariners to Pony win

    By Dick Sparrer

No team remains unbeaten in the Los Gatos Pony League--the Mariners saw to that last week.

Jason Livingston doubled home Nat Henry with the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh to lead the Mariners to a thrilling 6-5 win over the Mets on April 1.

The Mariners had scored a run in the sixth to take a 5-4 lead, but Jadd Correira ripped a solo homer in the top of the seventh to keep the Mets alive.

But the Mariners went to work in the bottom of the seventh. Mark Ericson singled to open the inning, but was caught attempting to steal.

Henry was hit by a pitch with one out, though, and moved to second on a balk. Livingston followed with his clutch double to drive in Henry and end the game.

Livingston singled and doubled in the win for the Mariners, and Ericson and Mike Brienzo each had two hits. Jeff Collins doubled in the win, and Henry, Travis Livingston, Chad Corl and Eric Rollin added hits.

Correira singled and homered for the Mets, and Andrew Ford had two hits. Brian Wendt doubled, and Jordan Senner, Wes Piper and Danny Politi each singled.

The Mets returned to the win column a few days later with a 4-1 victory over the Yankees. Piper and Politi combined to throw a five-hitter for the win.

Correira homered in the first for the Mets, and Politi had two hits. Brett Davis doubled, and Piper and Evan Prasker each singled.

Matt Hirakawa starred defensively at shortstop for the Yankees, making all three defensive outs in the fifth inning, and he also doubled for the Yanks.

Jeff Bridges had three hits, and Scott Brown doubled for the Yankees.

Russell Laubach went the distance to toss a five-hitter for the A's in a 5-1 win over the Mariners on Tuesday. Laubach, who struck out seven, helped his own cause with a single and a run-scoring triple.

Brian Dressman had two hits for the A's, and Adam Hudson doubled. Mark Johnson and Matt Martini also had hits.

Henry singled and doubled, and Brienzo had two hits for the Mariners. J. Livingston also singled.

The A's were coming off a 5-1 loss to the Diamondbacks. Kyle Jensen allowed just one hit and struck out five in five shutout innings to get the win.

Brady Griffiths clubbed a two-run double, and Jeremy Bays singled home a run to lead the D-backs to the victory. Josh Miceli and Chris Cuthbert also had hits in the win.

Martini had two hits, and Dressman added one for the A's in the loss.

The Giants won twice last week, beating the Diamondbacks 5-1 and the Yankees 7-2.

Dave Holtzman went the distance to flip a three-hitter for the Giants in the 7-2 win over the Yanks. Holtzman struck out 11 in the win.

Kenny Rodrigues singled and tripled, and Devin Scott had two hits for the Giants. Holtzman and Nick Perrone each doubled, and Jarrett Kasper and Nick Guedenet added singles.

J.P. Grist tripled, Hirakawa doubled, and Doug Searles singled for the only Yankee hits of the day.

Holtzman picked up his second mound win of the week with six innings of one-hit relief in a 6-5 extra inning win over the D-backs.

The clubs were tied 5-5 through seven, but the Giants broke the tie with a run in the top of the eighth. Brett Hampton reached on an error, moved to second on a single by Spencer Maltbie and scored on a single by Logan Schafer.

Holtzman, who had retired 10 straight hitters heading into the eighth, allowed a walk, but put down the Diamondbacks to nail down the victory.

Perrone ripped a three-run double in the first, and Schafer had two hits in the game. Scott, Kasper, Jeff Blue and Holtzman also had hits in the win.

Michael Robards singled and doubled, and Patrick McDonald singled home a couple of runs. Jeremy Bays doubled.

The key defensive play of the game came in the third when Guedenet, the Giants right fielder, caught a fly ball and gunned a strike to Schafer at the plate to cut down a Diamondbacks runner attempting to tag up from third.

Los Gatos Pony League standings (as of April 6): Mets 3-1, Diamondbacks 3-2, Giants 3-2, Mariners 2-2, A's 2-3, Yankees 1-4.
