Stratton qualifies for Far West

Rachel Stratton thought she was a water polo player who also swims. But she may have discovered otherwise when she competed in the Senior Short Course Swimming Championships in Clovis last month.

Stratton, an 18-year-old Los Gatos senior, is an outstanding water polo player who took up competitive swimming a year ago, hoping that it would help her polo game.

But she has quickly discovered that maybe she's a swimmer who also plays water polo.

Stratton went fast enough in Clovis to qualify in six events for the Far Western Short Course Championships in Walnut Creek.

Stratton covered the 50-yard freestyle in 25.99, the 100 free in 56.23, the 200 free in 2:00.91, the 500 free in 5:26.22, the 100 butterfly in 1:04.37 and the 200 backstroke in 2:18.77.
