Los Gatos Weekly-TimesThe ProwlerThe Prowler wonders if readers know that April 19-25 is National Volunteer Week? This year marks the 25th anniversary of the event, which was established in 1974 by executive order of the late President Richard Nixon. According to the San Jose-based Volunteer Exchange, the United States is filled with some 93 million volunteers over the age of 18. Kudos to all those generous people! The Prowler thinks the Volunteer Exchange also deserves kudos for its database of 2,100 volunteer opportunities with more than 630 nonprofit and public agencies in Santa Clara County--all compiled since its 1987 founding. The VE matches volunteers with just the right projects. Give them a call at 247-1126. Community Impact is another nonprofit that provides folks throughout the Bay Area with fun and flexible volunteer opportunities to fit their interests. The Palo Alto- based group was founded in 1988 by three Bay Area natives. For more info, call 650/965-0242. Speaking of good causes, the Prowler hears Tercera Gallery at 24 N. Santa Cruz Ave. is again holding an exhibit of art by 45 children and teens served by Eastfield Ming Quong. The EMQ Painting Project, facilitated by artist/instructor Phil Rosenthal, lets young people with serious emotional difficulties express themselves creatively. Art sale proceeds benefit the children of EMQ. EMQ, which has facilities in Los Gatos and Campbell, serves troubled youths and their families with a spectrum of services, mental health programs and chemical-dependency education. The exhibit runs April 25 through May 2, with a reception from 1 to 4 p.m. on the first day.
