Trail Center makes maps available
The Trail Center, a furnisher of maps and trail information, recently published a new recreation map of the Santa Cruz Mountains that includes more than a dozen parks and open space preserves along Route 35, between Old La Honda Road and Highway 9.
The large map allows hikers to follow trails through various preserves without switching from map to map. Color-coded trails indicate hiking, biking and equestrian areas. The map also shows restrooms, water, picnic areas and hostels.
The map costs $6 and is available at outdoor equipment shops and some Bay Area bookstores. It can be ordered directly from the Trail Center by calling 415/968-7065 or by sending a check for $8.47 to 3921 E. Bayshore Road Palo Alto, CA 94303.
Arbor Day observed at Oak Meadow Park
The town's Arbor Day celebration is scheduled for 10 a.m. April 25 at Oak Meadow Park. Town parks workers will plant several cedar and oak trees in the park.
Students from Alta Vista, Van Meter, Blossom Hill and Daves Avenue schools will complete the planting.
For the 17th consecutive year, Los Gatos has been named a Tree City U.S.A. by the National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.
To be eligible for the designation, a community must have an enforced tree-protection ordinance, a tree board or department and a comprehensive community forestry program and must observe Arbor Day. The April 25 celebration and tree-planting is open to the public.
