Bettina Power

Los Gatos resident Bettina "Betty" Kroeber Power died March 3 at the age of 90.

Born in Long Island, N.Y., on Dec. 18, 1906, Power attended Vesper Art School in Boston. As a young woman, she worked as a reporter for the Croton-on-Hudson newspaper and later taught art in Scarborough, N.Y.

While living in Kansas City, Mo., she crafted marionettes for marionette opera productions by the Conservatory of Music, including I Pagliacci, Hansel and Gretel and Madame Butterfly.

She and her late husband, James, retired to Los Gatos in 1973. She was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church and was active on various committees of the Los Gatos Village Homeowners Association.

Her survivors include daughter Barbara Reed of Boulder Creek; son James A. Power Jr. of Topeka, Kan.; grandchildren David Reed of Santa Cruz, Michael Reed of Pasadena; Jane Burruss of Berryton, Kan., and Carol Becker of Bellevue, Neb., and also two great-grandsons.

Memorial services have been held, with arrangements by the Neptune Society. Donations may be made to the Salvation Army or to the Boy Scouts of America.
