Students create 'art that flies'
Students will get the opportunity to go up, up and away by participating in the upcoming Art That Flies classes presented by local artist Amy Konsterlie.
Classes for children ages 9 to 11 run April 17 through May 29 at Van Meter Elementary School, and classes for youngsters ages 11 to 14 run April 19 through May 31 at Fisher Middle School. The cost for each seven-week program is $175. There is also a $10 materials fee to be paid to the instructor on the first day of class.
Students will learn to create kites, airplanes and mobiles, using a variety of materials.
Fisher Five wins jazz competition
Five boys from Fisher Middle School, who call themselves the "Fisher Five," won the jazz combo division of the San Jose Jazz Society Smith Dobson Youth Jazz Competition. The Fisher Five are Marcus Dufort on trombone, Forest Gallien on bass guitar, David Lindskog on drums, Brandon Manning on saxophone and Tim Switzer on piano.
The competition, which took place on March 27 at San Jose State University, featured sixth- through 12th-graders from around the Bay Area.
The boys met in their school jazz band and formed their own group, which practices on weekends.
Students make UO dean's list
Megan Shpiel, a freshman from Los Gatos, and Molly Miranda Vaden, a junior art major from Monte Sereno, made the University of Oregon dean's list for fall 2001. Shpiel and Vaden received grade point averages of at least 3.75.
Slightly more than 1,850 students out of 14,747 undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students made the dean's list at the university for the fall term.
WVC honors its faculty
West Valley College held its first official recognition ceremony for faculty members. The college presented awards in five categories to eight faculty members for their contributions to students and the teaching profession.
Steve Blasberg won the award for publication or presentation excellence, while Al Mingione received the associate faculty teaching excellence award. The college recognized Diane Tsutsumi for service to community excellence and Kim Aufhauser for teaching excellence.
The four other faculty members--Julie Maia, Veronese Anderson, Joan Sarlo and Jim Wilczak--won awards for service to the college experience. Awards to Anderson, Sarlo and Wilczak were for lifetime achievement.
The West Valley College Academic Senate and Staff Development sponsored the ceremony.
