Creek cleanup set for Earth Day
As part of a countywide creek cleanup effort scheduled for April 20--Earth Day 1996--the Creek Connections Action Group is seeking volunteers to help remove trash and debris from Santa Clara County's creeks and rivers as well as parts of the shoreline.
Volunteers will receive gloves, trash bags, refreshments and commemorative T-shirts for their work, which will last from 9 a.m. to noon. For more information or to register as a volunteer, call the Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Department at 354-4902.
Good Sam proceeds return to community
The nonprofit group that sold Good Samaritan Health System wants Santa Clara County residents to help it decide how to spend $56 million in proceeds from the sale.
The catch is that the Good Samaritan Charitable Trust has to spend the money on charitable causes.
At public hearings that might begin as early as May, anyone concerned may address the trust about how to spend the money as well as what types of health-care services are needed in the area.
The trust will appoint a task force of county residents to draw up its long-range plan defining the trust's mission and how it will spend its money. The trust could both operate its own programs and give grants for other programs that promote health.
Columbia/HCA bought Good Samaritan in January 1996. For more information, call 537-0166.
