With more restrictions on building within city limits, builders and clients are applying an old solution to a new problem

Today's building restrictions are literally driving Bay Area homeowners into the ground. With planning commissions cracking down on monster homes, residents are building basements--not the little dark, dank storage cellars where scary things go bump in the night, but big sprawling basements where the things that go bump are likely to be billiard balls or the soundtrack from a horror movie.
