Legal counselor for Israeli reform movement to speak

Rabbi Uri Regev, a crusader for the rights of non-Orthodox Jews living in Israel, is the last speaker in the 2000-01 season of the Distinguished Lecture Series of the South Bay Institute for Jewish Living and Learning. His program, "Can Israel Be Both Jewish and Democratic?" takes place on April 26, at 7:30 p.m. at Congregation Beth David, 19700 Prospect Road in Saratoga.
Regev serves as executive director and counsel for the Israel Religious Action Center, the legal advocacy arm of the Reform Movement in Israel. The center promotes human equality, social justice and religious pluralism. Regev has successfully argued and won several landmark cases in the Israeli Supreme Court that involve the issues of religion and state. He is also active in civil rights and grassroots political activities.
Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for senior citizens and $10 for ages 30 and under. An additional $5 fee will be charged for tickets purchased at the door. Babysitting is available with advance reservation. Tickets are available by calling 408.358.5918.
This is the seventh year the Distinguished Lecture Series has presented by the South Bay Institute for Jewish Living and Learning with support from the Hebrew Free Loan Association and Metro Newspapers. The institute is a committee representing San Jose-area Jewish organizations that provides a community structure for adult Jewish education.
